[CANCELLED] Progress and challenges in liquid exfoliation and processing of 2D materials

Abstract:

Liquid exfoliation has become an important production technique to give access to large quantities of two-dimensional nanosheets in colloidal dispersion. Importantly, this is a highly versatile technique that can be applied to numerous layered materials beyond graphene. In this talk, I will review the most important steps that allowed us to arrive at a point, where it is possible to produce samples suitable for (device) applications including mechanistic understanding of sonication-based exfoliation and centrifugation-based size selection, reliable determination of nanosheet size and thickness, production of tiled networks with liquid interface assembly.

The fundamental understanding of the exfoliation process has created awareness that large and thin nanosheets (i.e. with high aspect ratio) are not accessible through mechanical liquid phase exfoliation (sonication, shear, ball milling) resulting in the need to explore alternatives. A prominent example is electrochemical exfoliation which exploits voltage-driven intercalation to favour delamination over tearing and fragmentation. Here, new challenges arise such as gaining control over doping and surface contamination and to develop means to measure these crucial parameters.

In this context, I will summarise our recent contributions in this area which include i) a semi-quantitative assessment of surface adsorbates using diffuse-reflectand IR spectroscopy and ii) identification of additive-free (green) liquid environments that efficiently stabilise electrochemically-exfoliated nanosheets.
