Madrid, 16th february, 2026. IMDEA Nanociencia has achieved excellent results in the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) 2025 postdoctoral fellowship call, securing four of the 182 fellowships awarded in Spain. Of the four projects selected, three will be carried out within the group led by Professor Thomas Hermans and one within the group led by Dr. José Ignacio Urgel. These results reinforce IMDEA Nanociencia's dynamic research environment and its great capacity to attract and welcome the best research talent from around the world.
The MSCA 2025 postdoctoral fellowship call, part of the European Union's Horizon Europe framework, attracted a record number of 17,066 proposals worldwide, of which 1,610 outstanding postdoctoral researchers were selected to receive funding from this highly competitive group, corresponding to a success rate of 9.6%. A total of €404.3 million in grants will support fellows in advancing their careers through international, interdisciplinary, and intersectoral mobility at top institutions in Europe and beyond.
Research excellence of the award-winning groups
The Systems Chemistry Laboratory, led by Professor Thomas Hermans, focuses on cutting-edge challenges at the intersection of chemistry, physics, and materials science. The group's work includes dissipative self-assembly in disequilibrium in supramolecular systems, chiral separation technologies, and innovative microfluidic approaches without physical walls. The MSCA-PF-awarded projects within this group are entitled “Morphology control by microfluidics,” “Self-repairing peptide membrane,” and “Adjustment of flow profiles in wall-less tubular devices,” and will be led by Triza Pal, Juntian Wu, and Paszkal Papp, respectively.
The Surface Nanoarchitectonics group, led by Dr. José Ignacio Urgel, conducts advanced research on the surface synthesis of synthetic carbon-based nanostructures with atomic precision, such as new nanographenes and covalently bonded organic polymers. The MSCA-PF project awarded within this group is entitled “Simulated Organic Many-Body Transport” and will be led by Diego Soler. The hosting institution IMDEA Nanociencia.
