Javier Rial wins the prize "Three Minute Thesis"

Javier Rial, Ph.D. student at the group of "Permanent Magnets and Applications" led by Dr. Alberto Bollero, has won the "Three Minute Thesis" prize in the Science category, in representation of Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

The thesis of Javier Rial, entitled "Nanocrystalline isotropic MnAl permanent magnet powders" has been the best in its category. Javier's research focuses on the search for a high efficiency permanent magnet material under the premises: natural resources (manganese and aluminum) available in Europe, low cost and a low environmental impact -technological magnets "made in Europe" using Nanoscience.

The contest "Three Minute Thesis", organized by the Doctorate Schools of the University of Alcalá (UAH), the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM), the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and the Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC), is a initiative of the University of Queensland that since 2010 has been extended to more than 600 universities in 65 countries with the purpose of doctoral students to present their research in a limited time, through a simple and intelligible language that is capable of reaching the general public. The jury, composed of members of the aforementioned Doctoral Schools, has taken into account the clarity of the presentation, the objectives of the thesis and the language used -adapted to a non-specialized audience- as selection criteria. The winners of each of the five categories have been awarded a cash prize.
